短文
By six o’clock the stallholders at Pasar Malam Taman Indah had been setting up for an hour. Mr Lim’s fan of paper lanterns hung crooked, but he left it; the smell of charcoal and pandan was already drifting over the car park. Nadia, who had sold kuih beside her grandmother every Friday since she was nine, counted the trays twice and frowned. This was the first evening that the stall was hers alone. Across the row, the new banner for the supermarket’s “Fresh Market Week” glowed above the crowd, brighter than every lantern in the lane.
题目
Which detail shows how long Nadia has helped at the stall?
Show answer
细节是 “every Friday since she was nine”。
What can you infer about Nadia’s feelings about running the stall alone? Support your answer.
Show answer
证据:她 “counted the trays twice and frowned”,而且文中强调这是 “the first evening”,摊位 “hers alone”。
A student writes: “Her grandmother must be ill.” Is this a sound inference?
Show answer
站得稳的推论要紧贴文本所给的内容,例如 “Nadia is taking on new responsibility”。
Explain what “drifting” means in “the smell of charcoal and pandan was already drifting over the car park”.
Show answer
How does the writer make the supermarket banner seem powerful? Refer to specific words.
Show answer
In one sentence, summarise what makes the evening difficult for Nadia.
Show answer
示范:“Nadia is running the stall alone for the first time while a brighter supermarket banner competes for the crowd’s attention.”
Combine these three sentences into one: “The banner was bright. The banner was bigger than the lanterns. The banner drew people’s eyes.”
Show answer
示范:“The supermarket banner was bigger and brighter than the lanterns, so it drew the crowd’s eyes.”
Rewrite for a letter to the market committee: “Hey, the lights near our stalls are so dim lol, can you fix them?”
Show answer
示范:“We would be grateful if the lighting near the stalls could be repaired, as customers find it hard to see our goods.”
Correct the punctuation: “Nadia counted the trays, she frowned.”
Show answer
She frowned.”,或 “Nadia counted the trays; she frowned.”,或 “Nadia counted the trays and frowned.”
Replace the weak words: “The lane was very, very crowded, and Nadia went to the front of the stall.”
Show answer
示范:“The lane was packed, and Nadia hurried to the front of the stall.”
