要安全地缩短句子，先列出条件，再删去其余的内容。装饰可以去掉。表示何时、对谁或“只有当”的词，必须以某种形式保留。
这是句子构建与改写的最后一项技能，并运用词族把从句变成简洁的名词短语。
哪些可以删，哪些必须留？
动手之前，先把长句的各部分分成两张清单。

缩短有四种做法：删去填充语，把从句变成短语，把短语换成一个词，把主语相同的两句合并。条件词可以改变形式，但不能消失。Unless another student reserves it 可以变成 unless reserved。
例题
缩短这个句子：
Students may use the library laptops only after they have signed the register, and only until five o’clock in the afternoon.
第 1 步，列出条件。 对象：学生。条件一：已经在登记册上签名。条件二：只能用到五点。动作：使用笔记本电脑。
第 2 步，删去多余部分。 Library laptops 可以保留，in the afternoon 在 five o’clock 之后不需要，they have signed 可以变成 signing。
第 3 步，重建。 Students may use library laptops after signing the register, until five o’clock.
第 4 步，检查条件。 先签名：有。五点结束：有。对象：学生。没有删掉任何关键内容。
新版本短得多，也更清楚，因为两个条件都看得见。
要留意的错误
错误答案： You may keep the library book for three weeks unless another student reserves it. → You may keep the book for three weeks.
更短的句子删掉了 unless，变成在任何情况下都能借三周。
改法是用简洁的形式保留条件：You may keep the book for three weeks unless it is reserved. 测试很简单。读缩短后的版本，问自己：有没有一种情况，原句说不行而我的句子说可以？如果有，就说明丢了条件。
