Foreign-language reading and writing

You can recognise the characters and still be unsure what a short notice asks or how to answer a message task.

This module trains two linked skills: reading a short Chinese text for the exact detail a question needs, and writing a short Chinese message that answers every part of a task. It sits inside IGCSE Chinese and Mandarin pathways. Chinese examples stay in Simplified Chinese, with pinyin where it helps.

Cambridge lists three Chinese qualifications, 0509, 0523 and 0547, and they are not interchangeable. This module is written for foreign-language learners, so confirm your code and task format on the Cambridge subject page first.

What should you know before you start?

You should know common verbs, numbers, days and basic sentence order. You do not need long word lists. If characters still slow you down, characters, words and context is a good companion module.

An orienting example

An invented notice: 如果星期六下雨,球赛改到星期日。 (Rúguǒ xīngqīliù xiàyǔ, qiúsài gǎi dào xīngqīrì.)

Question: It rains on Saturday. When is the match?

The condition 如果…下雨 is true, so the match moves to Sunday (星期日). A reader who stops at 星期六 gets it wrong. The same habit of reading the whole clause helps when you write: a message that mentions Saturday but leaves out the rain plan is incomplete.

In what order should you study the lessons?

  1. Find a condition in a short Chinese notice. Start here, because finding the clause that decides the answer is the core reading habit.
  2. Cover the requested points in a message. Turn a prompt into a checklist so no point is missed.
  3. Link simple sentences coherently. Add connectors so your points read as one message.
  4. Express past and planned events appropriately. Make time clear with time words and markers.
  5. Check a response against the confirmed 0547 task guidance. Build a checking routine using current Cambridge material.

What are the common traps?

  • Answering from the first line. The decisive clause often comes later, after 如果 or 只有.
  • Writing a warm message that skips a point. Each instruction in the prompt needs its own sentence.
  • Mismatched connectors. 但是 after a reason, or 所以 after 如果, breaks the logic.
  • Contradicting time signals. 明天 with 了 sends two opposite messages.
  • Copying task rules from a forum. Length and format rules come from the current Cambridge material and your exam centre.

How should you use the practice set?

After lessons 1 to 3, try the first half of the mixed practice set, then finish it after lessons 4 and 5. Write your answer before opening the explanation. The summary selection and paraphrase studio and the writing revision compare view support the reading and revision work.

If you would like a teacher to read your drafts with you, online one-to-one Chinese tuition is built for that.

Questions people ask

Is this module only for Chinese 0547?

The skills suit learners of Mandarin as a foreign language most directly. Cambridge lists 0509, 0523 and 0547 as different qualifications with different task demands, so confirm your own code on the Cambridge subject page before planning revision.

Do I need to write characters from memory?

Examples here are in Simplified characters with pinyin beside many of them. Whether and how much you must write by hand depends on your qualification and task, so confirm it in the current syllabus and with your teacher.

In what order should I study the lessons?

Follow the order on this page: notices first, then message points, linking, time and finally checking. Each lesson reuses the earlier ones. Finish with the practice set.

How long does the module take?

Plan for twenty to thirty minutes per lesson, including the self-check, then a longer sitting for the practice set. Spread the lessons over several days so the patterns settle.
