A condition in a notice is the small piece that says when something happens: if it rains, if you register, unless you bring a card. Short notices often put the date and place first and the condition later, so a quick reader answers from the first line.
This lesson trains you to find the condition before you answer. It belongs to foreign-language reading and writing.
Notices and passages in this lesson are original and written for practice. Chinese stays in Simplified characters, with pinyin where it helps.
How do conditions work in a notice?
A condition has two parts: the trigger and the result. In 如果下雨,比赛改到星期六 (rúguǒ xiàyǔ, bǐsài gǎi dào xīngqīliù), the trigger is 下雨 (rain) and the result is the move to Saturday.
Chinese often drops the second word of a pair.
如果…就… (if… then…) may appear as only 如果, with 就 missing.
Treat any clause that follows 如果, 要是, 只有 or 除非 as a trigger.
Three patterns cover most short notices:
- 如果 / 要是…就… means “if A, then B”. The result happens only when A is true.
- 只有…才… means “only if A, then B”. Without A, B does not happen.
- 除非…不然… means “unless A, otherwise B”. A is the exception.
A step-by-step method
- Read the question first and note what is being asked: a date, a place, a thing to bring or a number.
- Scan the notice for condition words and underline them.
- Write the trigger and the result next to each condition word, in a few characters.
- Check which trigger matches the situation in the question. Only then pick the result.
- Re-read the other lines to make sure nothing else changes the answer.
Worked example
This original notice is from an invented school society.
社团通知 本周六的中文角在三楼教室举行,下午两点开始,请提前十分钟到。参加的同学要先报名,名额只有二十个。如果报名的人超过二十个,我们会抽签决定。要是下雨,活动不会取消。
Shètuán tōngzhī. Běn zhōuliù de Zhōngwén jiǎo zài sān lóu jiàoshì jǔxíng, xiàwǔ liǎng diǎn kāishǐ, qǐng tíqián shí fēnzhōng dào. Cānjiā de tóngxué yào xiān bàomíng, míng’é zhǐ yǒu èrshí ge. Rúguǒ bàomíng de rén chāoguò èrshí ge, wǒmen huì chōuqiān juédìng. Yàoshi xiàyǔ, huódòng bú huì qǔxiāo.
Question: Twenty-five students register. How is it decided who can come?
Step 1. The question asks about a method of deciding, with 25 registered.
Step 2. Condition words: 如果 (the registration clause) and 要是 (the rain clause).
Step 3. Trigger and result. 如果报名的人超过二十个 → 抽签决定 (draw lots). 要是下雨 → 活动不会取消 (the activity is not cancelled).
Step 4. 25 is more than 20, so the first trigger is true. The rain condition is not part of this question.
Answer: They decide by drawing lots (抽签).
A plausible mistake
A student answers “the first twenty to register” because the line before the condition says the quota is twenty. That line only states the limit. It does not say how to choose when the limit is passed.
The correction: the quota line gives a number, and the 如果 line gives the rule for what happens over that number. Always find the sentence whose trigger matches the situation in the question.
Check yourself
Use this second original notice for all three questions.
旅行通知 星期五早上七点在校门口集合。如果星期五下雨,郊游改到星期六。只有带了家长同意书的同学才能上车。
1. It rains on Friday. When is the trip?
Show answer
如果星期五下雨,郊游改到星期六. The trip moves to Saturday.
2. Ali forgot the parent consent form. Can he get on the bus?
Show answer
只有带了家长同意书的同学才能上车 means the form is required. Without it, he cannot get on the bus.
3. The weather is fine on Friday. Where and when do students meet?
Show answer
The rain condition is not triggered, so the Friday plan stands: the school gate at seven in the morning on Friday (星期五早上七点,校门口).
Where this leads next
Once you can find the condition, practise writing your own: cover the requested points in a message uses conditions inside a reply. The summary selection and paraphrase studio helps you mark which parts of a text answer the task. Test yourself with the reading and writing practice set.
If you keep losing marks on the one clause that decides the answer, our teachers can work through notices with you in online one-to-one Chinese tuition.
