想不起某个词时，不要停下来：描述这个意思、换个较简单的词，或简短地请对方告诉你那个词，然后继续说下去。听你说话的人主要注意沟通是否继续，而不是你是否知道某一个特定的词。
词想不起来时可以怎么办？
你有四种工具。选最快、又能把意思说清楚的那种。

| 用较笼统的词 | 用 “a vehicle” 代替 “ambulance” |

| 简短发问 | “Sorry, what is the word for a person who fixes pipes?” |
你也可以先说明有空白：“I cannot remember the word, but…” 这让对方知道你没有迷路，也给你一秒钟思考。
例题详解
问题：“What did you do last weekend?” 你想说 “I went to a reunion”，但这个词不见了。
第一步，保持冷静并示意： “I cannot remember the word, but…”
第二步，描述： “…it was a party where people from my old primary school met again.”
第三步，补充细节并继续： “It was good to see everyone, and we talked about our teachers.”
完整回答： “I cannot remember the word, but it was a party where people from my old primary school met again. It was good to see everyone, and we talked about our teachers.”
缺失的词被清楚的描述取代，对话没有出现长时间停顿就继续了。
要留意的错误
常见的失误是停止说话，一心去找那个确切的词。
错误回答： “I went to a… a… um… I forget… sorry.”
沉默越拖越长，学生往往连整句话都放弃了。
改正的方法是：那个词可有可无，意思才一定要说出来。用别的话说出你想表达的，然后继续。如果之后想起那个词，到时再用就好。

3. 给出一个示意有空白的短语，和一个礼貌求助的短语。
