Revise a conclusion so it answers the task

You reach the last paragraph with little energy left, and it ends up repeating what you already said.

A conclusion finishes the answer to the task. It should return to the question and say, in a fresh way, what your essay has shown. Repeating the introduction word for word wastes the final paragraph.

It builds on the planning in developing claims and the smooth flow from linking paragraphs.

What does a good conclusion do?

It does three small jobs. It answers the question directly, it gathers the key reasons into one idea, and it leaves the reader with a sense of finish.

Keep the language at the same level of tone as the rest of the piece, as covered in sustaining an audience-appropriate tone.

Worked example

Task: “Adakah sekolah patut menetapkan waktu tutup telefon bimbit? Berikan pendapat anda.”

Weak conclusion (invented writer, Mei Ling): “Rumusannya, telefon bimbit ada faedah dan keburukan. Ada orang setuju dan ada orang tidak setuju.”

The paragraph never answers the question.

Revised: “Pada pendapat saya, sekolah patut menetapkan waktu tutup telefon bimbit semasa kelas. Gangguan semasa pelajaran lebih merugikan daripada manfaat yang boleh dicapai pada waktu itu. Dengan peraturan yang jelas, telefon masih boleh digunakan secara berguna pada waktu rehat.”

The revision gives a clear answer, a reason and a balanced close.

A plausible mistake

Mei Ling ends with: “Sebagai penutup, saya ingin mengucapkan terima kasih kerana membaca esei saya.” The sentence is polite but answers nothing, and it does not suit an essay task.

Replace it with one sentence that states the answer again in new words, such as the revised paragraph above. The final line should serve the task, not the reader’s manners.

Self-check

  1. What question should your conclusion answer?
  2. This conclusion ends: “Banyak perkara boleh dibincangkan lagi.” What is missing?
Show answer
  1. The question set in the task, in your own words and with your position stated.
  2. It has no answer and no reason. Add a direct statement, for example: “Pada pendapat saya, usaha bersama lebih berkesan daripada tindakan seorang diri.”

Where this leads

Now try everything together in the mixed practice set. If your conclusions still skip the question, a teacher can check them one by one.

The Malay tuition page describes the paid one-hour trial. Return to the module overview to review the full route.

Questions people ask

Should the conclusion add new points?

No new arguments. A conclusion pulls your points into a final answer to the question. A short closing thought is fine, as long as it grows from what you already wrote.

Is 'rumusannya' necessary?

It is not required. If the paragraph clearly answers the task, the reader will know it is the end. Where you use it, follow it with a real answer, not a repeat.

How long should a conclusion be?

Two to four sentences usually do the job. Aim for a clear answer, a brief reason and, where the task suits it, a closing thought.
