This set has ten original questions on claims and examples, tone, narrative order, paragraph links and conclusions. Attempt each one in writing before opening the answer. All names and passages are invented for practice.
Model answers are one possible version. Yours may differ and still work, so judge it against the explanation, not word for word.
Questions
1. Claim or example? Which of these is a claim: (a) “Pelajar yang bersarapan lebih bertenaga” or (b) “Raju makan roti canai sebelum ke sekolah pada pagi Isnin”?
Show answer
(a) is the claim: a general statement a reader could dispute. (b) is an example, a specific person and moment. A paragraph needs both.
2. Add an example. Claim: “Kegiatan kokurikulum membina kerjasama.” Write one example sentence with a person and a place.
Show answer
It names a person, a team and an action.
3. Fix the example. “Ramai orang suka membaca.” Replace with a specific example.
Show answer
“Setiap Sabtu, perpustakaan awam di pekan saya dipenuhi kanak-kanak yang beratur untuk meminjam buku cerita.” It replaces a vague group with a place, time and action.
4. Choose the register. You are writing to the school librarian asking to extend a loan. Choose the better opening: (a) “Cik, saya memohon kebenaran melanjutkan pinjaman.” (b) “Cik, aku nak sambung pinjam buku.”
Show answer
(a). The reader is an adult in authority, so “saya memohon” fits. (b) mixes “Cik” with “aku nak”, which breaks the register.
5. Spot the shift. In this formal paragraph, which words break the tone? “Kami ingin mengadakan jualan kuih. Tapi kami tak tahu bila sesuai.”
Show answer
“Tapi” and “tak”. Use “Namun” or “Tetapi”, and “tidak”.
6. Plan a scene. Plan four paragraphs for a narrative titled “Hari Pertama di Sekolah Baharu”. Give one line for each.
Show answer
The shape is start, build, turning point, close. Any similar plan works.
7. Add sensory detail. Rewrite: “Dapur itu bising.” Use sound.
Show answer
“Bunyi kuali berdenting dan minyak mendesis, sementara ibu memanggil nama kami dari balik asap.” It shows noise through specific sounds.
8. Replace a stock link. Paragraph one ends: “…kantin sekolah sering sesak.” Paragraph two starts: “Selain itu, tandas sekolah kotor.” Write a better link.
Show answer
The new line picks up the idea of a space problem and extends it.
9. Name the relationship. What does “Akibatnya” show in a link?
Show answer
A result. It points to a consequence of what came before.
10. Rewrite the conclusion. Task: “Adakah anda setuju bahawa pelajar patut belajar memasak?” Weak ending: “Rumusannya, ada banyak perkara tentang memasak.” Write a better one.
Show answer
“Pada pendapat saya, pelajar patut belajar memasak kerana kemahiran ini melatih kebebasan dan perancangan. Seseorang yang boleh menyediakan makanan sendiri lebih bersedia menghadapi hidup sendirian.” It answers the question and gives a reason.
