This set mixes the four skills from people and personal experiences: connected descriptions, recounting with time references, comparing with reasons and writing a coherent message. The questions are original and run from easier to harder.
How should I use this set?
- Cover the answers and write your own French first. Several questions ask for your own sentences, so there is more than one correct response.
- Mark each answer sure, unsure or guess before you check it.
- Open the answer. For open questions, compare the features in the model rather than the exact words.
- Use the routing section at the end for any error.
Questions
1. Complete with the correct adjective form: Ma voisine est très ___ (gentil).
Show answer
The noun voisine is feminine, so the adjective takes an extra e. Ma voisine est très gentille.
2. Join into one sentence: Mon cousin est sportif. Mon cousin est timide.
Show answer
The two traits contrast, so use mais, and replace the second mon cousin with il. Mon cousin est sportif, mais il est timide. You could add un peu before timide.
3. Add a reason: Ma grand-mère est patiente.
Show answer
Model: Ma grand-mère est patiente parce qu’elle m’aide toujours avec mes devoirs sans se fâcher. Check that parce que is followed by a subject and a verb, and that the reason shows the trait.
4. Complete with the right time expression: ___ deux jours, j’ai vu un film avec mon frère.
Show answer
Il y a plus a length of time means “ago”. Il y a deux jours, j’ai vu un film avec mon frère.
5. Complete in the perfect tense: Hier soir, ma sœur ___ (rentrer) à vingt heures.
Show answer
Rentrer uses être, and the participle agrees with the feminine subject. Hier soir, ma sœur est rentrée à vingt heures.
6. Put these sentences in a logical order: (a) Enfin, nous sommes rentrés fatigués mais contents. (b) D’abord, nous avons pris le train pour la plage. (c) Ensuite, nous avons nagé pendant une heure.
Show answer
The time markers give the order: d’abord is first, ensuite is next, enfin is last. b, c, a.
7. Write a sentence that compares the bus and the train, using moins and rapide.
Show answer
Le bus est moins rapide que le train. The adjective agrees with le bus, so it stays masculine, and que introduces the second item.
8. Correct the error: Le vélo est plus bon pour la santé que la voiture.
Show answer
Use meilleur, which agrees with le vélo. Le vélo est meilleur pour la santé que la voiture.
9. Replace the vague reason with a specific one: J’aime le basket parce que c’est cool.
Show answer
Model: J’aime le basket parce qu’on joue en équipe et que le match est très rapide. Any reason that tells the listener something about the sport is good. Cool only describes a feeling.
10. Fix the register: Salut Camille, comment allez-vous? Merci pour votre lettre.
Show answer
Salut is informal, so use tu throughout. Salut Camille, comment vas-tu? Merci pour ta lettre.
11. Write a short reply (three or four sentences) to a pen-friend who asks: Quel est ton passe-temps préféré? Include a greeting, a reason and a question back.
Show answer
Model: Salut Léo, merci pour ton message. Mon passe-temps préféré, c’est le dessin, parce que j’aime inventer des personnages. Et toi, qu’est-ce que tu aimes faire? Check for: a greeting in the right register, a direct answer, a reason with parce que and a question back.
12. Write four sentences that describe a friend and recount what you did together last weekend.
Show answer
Model: Mon ami Karim est grand et très drôle, mais il est parfois timide. Samedi dernier, nous sommes allés au parc. D’abord, nous avons joué au football, puis nous avons mangé des glaces. Il faisait chaud et nous étions contents. Check for: agreement, time markers, correct helper verbs (sommes allés, avons joué) and at least one link such as mais or puis.

- Comparisons that are incomplete or vague (questions 7 to 9): revisit comparing two leisure activities.
- Register, structure or links in a message (questions 10 to 12): revisit writing a coherent message about an interest.
