A recording on your own device lets you hear what a listener hears, and the aim is to be understood, not to sound like someone else. This lesson gives you a short, kind method to check your tones and sounds. It closes Mandarin listening and speaking and works with any speaking answer, such as the one from extending a response.
All examples are invented.
What should you listen for?
Focus on features that change meaning. These are the ones a listener can mishear.
| Feature | Pair | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Tone | 买 mǎi / 卖 mài | buy / sell |
| Tone | 妈 mā / 马 mǎ | mother / horse |
| Tone | 问 wèn / 文 wén | ask / writing |
| Initial | 十 shí / 四 sì | ten / four |
| Initial | 知 zhī / 资 zī | know / resources |
Rhythm and accent matter less than these contrasts.
How do you review a recording step by step?
- Record about thirty seconds of your own answer, or read a short invented passage, with the private speaking recorder.
- Play it back once without reading. Note anything that sounds unclear.
- Play it back with the text. Underline at most three words where your tone or sound may not match what you meant.
- Say each word slowly five times, then in its sentence.
- Record the same lines again and compare. Delete the recording when you finish if you do not need it.
Worked example
Invented sentence for practice:
妈妈骑马去买书。
(Māma qí mǎ qù mǎi shū. Mother rides a horse to buy books.)
A student records it and plays it back. Three words stand out: 妈妈 sounds like 麻麻, 买 sounds like 卖 and 书 is clear.
Fix the first: 妈 is tone one, high and level, so hold the pitch steady. Fix the second: 买 is tone three, a dip, while 卖 is a sharp fall. Say 买书 and 卖书 as a pair. After three rounds, the second recording lets the listener distinguish 买书 from 卖书.
The student leaves the vowels and rhythm alone, because the sentence is already easy to understand.
The mistake to watch for
A common slip is to try to fix everything at once, or to judge the whole recording as wrong because it does not sound like a news presenter.
Mistaken review: “My accent is bad, so I need to start over.”
The student checked for a perfect voice, not for words that a listener could confuse.
The correction is to pick the three words that could change meaning and fix only those. Praise one thing that already works, such as steady pace, so the review stays useful and kind.

Say each answer aloud, then compare.
1. Which word means “to sell”: 买 or 卖?
Show answer
卖 (mài). It has a sharp falling tone, while 买 (mǎi, buy) dips and rises.
2. Mark the tones of 妈妈骑马: mā ma qí mǎ.
Show answer
妈 is tone one; the second 妈 is neutral; 骑 is tone two; 马 is tone three. mā ma qí mǎ. A wrong tone on 马 could make the listener hear 妈 or 骂.
3. Which of 四 and 十 has the curled-tongue sound?
Show answer
十 (shí) uses the curled-tongue sh. 四 (sì) uses the flatter s. Record both and listen for the difference.
Where this leads next
Put these steps into practice with the speaking questions in the mixed practice set. A teacher in online one-to-one Chinese tuition can listen to your own recording and choose the few features worth your time.
