Explain a preference with a reason

You can say what you like, but the follow-up question 为什么 leaves you with nothing to add.

To explain a preference in Mandarin, say your choice first and the reason second: 我比较喜欢……,因为…… (Wǒ bǐjiào xǐhuan …, yīnwèi …). It appears whenever a speaking or writing task asks “which do you prefer and why”.

This is the second lesson in Mandarin communication foundations. It builds on the polite questions from asking for a practical detail.

How do you build a preference with a reason?

Use two clauses joined by a comma.

  1. Choice: 我比较喜欢 + the option. Example: 我比较喜欢坐火车 (wǒ bǐjiào xǐhuan zuò huǒchē, I prefer taking the train).
  2. Reason: 因为 + a short fact. Example: 因为比较安静 (yīnwèi bǐjiào ānjìng, because it is quieter).
  3. Optional extra: 而且 + another fact, or 不过 (búguò, but) + a small downside.

The reason should be a fact you can say in a few words. Avoid long reasons you are unsure how to pronounce or write.

Worked example

The people and the situation are invented. Aiman is asked: 你想在家过生日还是去餐厅? (Nǐ xiǎng zài jiā guò shēngrì háishi qù cāntīng? Do you want to celebrate your birthday at home or at a restaurant?)

Step 1, choose: 我比较喜欢去餐厅 (wǒ bǐjiào xǐhuan qù cāntīng).

Step 2, reason: 因为朋友可以一起吃饭 (yīnwèi péngyou kěyǐ yìqǐ chīfàn, because friends can eat together).

Step 3, optional second reason: 而且不用打扫 (érqiě bú yòng dǎsǎo, and there is nothing to clean).

Full answer: 我比较喜欢去餐厅,因为朋友可以一起吃饭,而且不用打扫。

The answer is three short pieces, each one easy to say. That is better than one long sentence with a risk of error.

The mistake to watch for

A common slip is to copy the English structure “I like tea more than coffee”.

Mistaken sentence: 我喜欢茶比咖啡。

The comparison word 比 (bǐ) has been moved to the wrong place.

With 比, the pattern is A 比 B + adjective: 茶比咖啡好喝 (chá bǐ kāfēi hǎohē, tea tastes better than coffee). To state a preference, you can avoid 比 completely: 我比较喜欢茶,不太喜欢咖啡 (wǒ bǐjiào xǐhuan chá, bú tài xǐhuan kāfēi). It is shorter and safer.

Check yourself

1. Answer in Mandarin: 你想去海边还是去山上? Choose one and give one reason.

Show answer

Any logical answer works. Example: 我比较喜欢去海边,因为可以游泳。 (Wǒ bǐjiào xǐhuan qù hǎibiān, yīnwèi kěyǐ yóuyǒng.) Check that the choice comes first and the reason has 因为.

2. Correct this: 我喜欢巴士比火车。

Show answer

Use the safer preference frame: 我比较喜欢坐巴士,不太喜欢坐火车。 Or use 比 correctly: 巴士比火车方便。 (Bāshì bǐ huǒchē fāngbiàn.)

3. Add a second reason to: 我比较喜欢在家学习,因为很安静。

Show answer

我比较喜欢在家学习,因为很安静,而且可以休息。 (…érqiě kěyǐ xiūxi.) The second reason is joined with 而且.

Where this leads next

Next, put your answers in order with time expressions to organise an event. The mistake log and retest queue is useful for tracking which comparison slips you repeat.

If your reasons dry up when the topic changes, a teacher in online one-to-one Chinese tuition can feed you fresh topics and listen to how you respond.

Questions people ask

Do I need both 因为 and 所以 in one sentence?

No. Spoken Mandarin often uses 因为 alone, or just states the reason after a pause. Using 因为……所以…… together is correct and appears in written work, but a single frame is enough for a short speaking answer.

What is the difference between 喜欢 and 比较喜欢?

喜欢 (xǐhuan) means like. 比较喜欢 (bǐjiào xǐhuan) means like more, which is what you want when you are choosing between options. It does the job of 'prefer' without a longer comparison.

Can I give two reasons?

Yes. Add 而且 (érqiě, and also): 因为比较便宜,而且很快。 Two short reasons are usually better than one long, risky sentence.

Your next step

If your answers stop after one short sentence, a one-to-one teacher can help you add a natural reason and keep it flowing at your own pace.
