To ask for a practical detail in Mandarin, open politely with 请问 (qǐngwèn), then use one question word that matches the detail. Examples are 几点 (jǐ diǎn, what time), 在哪里 (zài nǎlǐ, where) and 多少钱 (duōshao qián, how much). This appears in conversation tasks, short messages and everyday listening.
It is the first lesson in Mandarin communication foundations, and every later lesson reuses these frames.
How do you build a polite question?
Think of the question as three parts: opener, topic, question word.
- Opener: 请问 (qǐngwèn) or 麻烦你 (máfan nǐ, sorry to trouble you).
- Topic: the thing you want to know about, such as 图书馆 (túshūguǎn, library).
- Question word: placed where the answer would go. In Mandarin the question word does not move to the front.
So “the library opens at what time” becomes 图书馆几点开门? (Túshūguǎn jǐ diǎn kāimén?), literally “library what time open”. The time word 几点 sits before the verb 开门.
Worked example
The people and the event are invented. Meilin wants to know the details of a school book fair.
Goal: ask the time, the place and the price.
- Time: 请问,书展几点开始? (Qǐngwèn, shūzhǎn jǐ diǎn kāishǐ?) Book fair what time start. “May I ask, what time does the book fair start?”
- Place: 书展在哪里举行? (Shūzhǎn zài nǎlǐ jǔxíng?) Book fair at where hold. “Where is it held?”
- Price: 门票多少钱? (Ménpiào duōshao qián?) Ticket how much money. “How much is a ticket?”
Notice the pattern. Each question keeps the topic first and the question word in the normal slot, with no extra 吗.
The mistake to watch for
A common slip is to copy English word order and put the time at the end.
Mistaken sentence: 书展开始几点?
It follows the English “start at what time” and sounds odd to a native listener.
The correction is 书展几点开始? Time words, including question words about time, go before the verb. A quick test: if the time can be said before “I do X” in English, it goes before the verb in Mandarin.
Another slip is adding 吗 to a question word question, as in 几点开始吗? Remove 吗 when you already have 几点.

Say each answer aloud before you open it.
1. Make this polite: 电影几点? You want to know when the film ends (结束 jiéshù).
Show answer
请问,电影几点结束? (Qǐngwèn, diànyǐng jǐ diǎn jiéshù?) The opener is added and the time word sits before the verb.
2. Correct this: 比赛在哪里举行吗?

Remove 吗, because 哪里 is already a question word: 比赛在哪里举行? (Bǐsài zài nǎlǐ jǔxíng?)
3. Ask how much a notebook costs, politely.
Show answer
请问,这本笔记本多少钱? (Qǐngwèn, zhè běn bǐjìběn duōshao qián?) Any natural opener plus 多少钱 is acceptable.
Where this leads next
Once your questions are steady, move on to explaining a preference with a reason, then test the whole module in the practice set. The summary selection and paraphrase studio helps you practise picking only the details a question needs.
Some learners can read these frames but still hesitate when speaking. A teacher in online one-to-one Chinese tuition can listen live and correct your word order as you go.
