A student can take Cambridge IGCSE exams without attending a school, as a private candidate, by entering through an exam centre that accepts private candidates. Switching from SPM preparation is also possible, but it needs planning because the syllabuses and exam bodies are different.
This page walks through the questions in the order they usually come up. It does not tell you which route is right, because that depends on your child and the next step they want.
What does studying outside school involve?
Cambridge describes private candidates as people who take its exams without attending a registered centre. The entry route is the centre, and you arrange everything with it, not with Cambridge.
You then own the parts a school would normally cover: working through the syllabus, practice, feedback and timing. The registration steps explain the exam side.
What must you check first?
Three checks come before anything else.
- Is each subject open to private candidates? Cambridge says some syllabuses are not.
- Can your child meet every assessment? Cambridge says candidates must be able to meet the full requirements of any assessment they enter, which may include practical or oral parts. See practical and coursework route checks.
- Which centre will accept your child? Read finding an exam centre.
Any rules about schooling for your child’s age belong to the Ministry of Education, so ask the ministry rather than relying on a general page.
How does switching from SPM work?
Treat it as a move between two systems. Cambridge IGCSE is set by Cambridge International for students aged 14 to 16, while SPM is run by the Lembaga Peperiksaan in Malaysia. Read IGCSE and SPM compared first.
Then compare what your child has already covered with the Cambridge syllabus for each subject. The topic comparison guide shows how to find overlaps and gaps.
| Step | What to do | Who can answer |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Decide the next destination | The school, college or university |
| 2 | Choose subjects and tier | The syllabus, the centre |
| 3 | Find a centre and a series | The centre |
| 4 | Map existing work to the syllabus | You and the teacher |
| 5 | Plan preparation time | You, with the series date |
Which series and timeline are realistic?
Cambridge examines IGCSE in the June and November series, with results in August and January. Your centre decides which it offers, so confirm that early. See exam series and results timing.
Work backwards from the exam month. A switching student often needs more time on subjects with no overlap, so plan the extra weeks into the timeline.
What does the cost include?
Exam costs go to the centre and the centre sets them, see the private-candidate cost structure. Preparation costs are a separate decision, see what shapes the cost of IGCSE tuition.
How can tuition help?
Tuition can give a student a teacher who reads their working and teaches the next step. It can also help a switching student find which topics are new.
Our service is online one-to-one Cambridge IGCSE tuition anywhere in Malaysia. Entry and results stay with your exam centre.
The paid one-hour trial starts from RM80 at the assigned teacher’s confirmed rate. The rate is agreed before the trial and kept for later lessons. The private-candidate readiness checklist pulls the exam-side questions into one place.
