IGCSE and SPM are two separate qualifications from two separate bodies. Neither is better in general. The right one depends on where your child plans to study next. This page shows what is different and what to confirm before you commit.
We teach Cambridge IGCSE only, so we explain that side from Cambridge’s own pages. For SPM and for local entry rules, we point you to the Malaysian bodies who set them.
Who sets each qualification?
Cambridge IGCSE is set by Cambridge International. It is aimed at students aged 14 to 16, with a choice of more than 70 subjects in any combination.
SPM is the national examination administered in Malaysia by the Lembaga Peperiksaan, under the Ministry of Education. Its syllabus, subject rules and calendar are published by that office, not by Cambridge.
How do they compare side by side?
| Question | Cambridge IGCSE | SPM |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets it? | Cambridge International | Lembaga Peperiksaan, Malaysia |
| Grades | Eight grades, A* to G | Check the Lembaga Peperiksaan for the current scale |
| How is it assessed? | Written, oral, coursework and practical, depending on subject | Check the current SPM subject requirements |
| Subjects | More than 70, in any combination | Set by the Malaysian curriculum |
| Exam series | June and November | Set by the Lembaga Peperiksaan |
| How do you enter? | Through a school or exam centre | Through a school or the national process |
We left the SPM cells open on purpose. Those details change, so read them from the body that sets the rules.
What does IGCSE assessment look like?
Cambridge says IGCSE assessment takes place at the end of the course. It can include written, oral, coursework and practical components. Many subjects offer both Core and Extended curricula.
Results are issued in August after the June series and in January after the November series. Grades run from A* to G, with clear guidelines for the standard of each grade. You can read more in our guide to grading and thresholds.
What should you check before choosing?
Start from where your child wants to go next, not from the exam. Ask the next school, college or university which qualification and which grades it asks for in your child’s case.
MQA publishes a separate list of school qualifications accepted for entry to higher education in Malaysia, and it states that entry requirements fall under the Department of Higher Education. Use it as a starting point and then confirm directly with the institution. Our page on future course requirements shows how to ask.
Who tends to choose which route?
Families already in an international or private school often follow IGCSE because the school teaches it. Families in national schools usually follow SPM because it is the school’s route.
Some students switch between the two or study IGCSE outside school. That needs more planning, so read IGCSE outside school and switching from SPM and the steps to register as a private candidate.
How can tuition help if you choose IGCSE?
IGCSE tuition works through the Cambridge syllabus one student at a time. An assigned teacher can find the exact step where your child’s reasoning slips and teach from there.
If IGCSE is your route, message us on WhatsApp and we assign a teacher. The paid one-hour trial starts from RM80 at the confirmed rate, and ongoing lessons continue at that rate. For what to expect, see IGCSE tuition explained and the list of subject tuition pages.
