**转折连接词(contrast connector)**是表示两个想法互相对立的词或短语:but、however、although、whereas、on the other hand、in fact、despite。
| despite, in spite of | 事情与预期相反 | 结果 |
Most people expect a weekend without phones to feel like a punishment. In fact, the group in the study reported feeling calmer by Sunday evening. Although they missed checking messages, they said that conversations at meals were longer.
Question: What does the writer want readers to understand about phone-free weekends?
- A. They feel like a punishment.
- B. They can make people feel calmer, despite some inconvenience.
- C. They make meals shorter.
- D. They are impossible for most people.
In fact(第 2 句)和 Although(第 3 句)。
“Most people expect… punishment” 是一种预期,因为 expect 表示想法,而不是结果。
第 3 步,读 In fact。
“They missed checking messages” 被承认,而主句 “conversations at meals were longer” 承载更重的意思。
A,“They feel like a punishment”,因为第 1 句这样说。
纠正方法:把以 “most people think” 或 “many expect” 开头的句子当作铺垫。
1. “Whereas the old bus route took forty minutes, the new one takes twenty-five.”
2. “Although the hall was noisy, the debate continued.”
The debate continued。
3. “Some argue that homework is a waste of time. However, a teacher in the school says short tasks help pupils remember lessons.”
