A good first Business lesson has one clear target, your own answer to look at, and a fresh case at the end. That is easy to arrange if you spend ten minutes beforehand finding the pattern behind your lost marks. This page shows how.
Why does the focus matter?
An hour goes quickly. If the lesson tries to cover marketing, finance, people and evaluation together, you leave having touched everything and repaired nothing. A narrow target lets the teacher read your answer with you, find the sentence where it turns general, and rebuild it.
Step 1: Gather three pieces of evidence
- One or two answers that lost marks, with the case or question attached.
- The feedback or mark scheme points, from a teacher or a model answer.
- One sentence on what you were thinking when you wrote the weak part.
That third item is the most useful. “I thought I should define the term first” points to a specific habit. “I do not know” also helps, because it tells the teacher where to start.
Step 2: Match your pattern to a focus
| What keeps happening | Possible focus | Where to read first |
|---|---|---|
| Answer repeats the case back | Applying a concept to a fact | case repeated without a concept |
| Advantages fit any business | Using case facts in each point | generic advantages |
| Conclusion does not answer the question | Linking to the objective | conclusion and objective |
| Limitations are named but not explained | Stating the consequence | limitation without consequence |
| Profit and cash are mixed up | Timing of cash | cash flow and finance |
| Break-even or cost figures feel shaky | Costs, revenue and break-even | costs, revenue and break-even |
| Unsure how to read ratios | Ratios with limits | financial statements and ratios |
| Unsure which syllabus applies | Checking 0450 or 0264 by exam year | 0450 to 0264 transition |
Choose the one or two rows that fit your situation. An exact match is not required.
Step 3: Try a two-minute self-diagnostic
Here is a short original case. Write your answer first, then open the feedback.
A small laundry shop in Ipoh has RM4,000 of cash in the bank. The owner is offered a discount on a large stock of detergent if she pays RM3,500 today. Her objective this year is to keep enough cash to pay staff wages. Should she buy?
Show answer
A general answer says “buying in bulk lowers the cost per unit, so profit rises, so she should buy”. An applied answer notices that RM3,500 of RM4,000 would leave only RM500, which may not cover wages. It says the discount helps cost per wash but locks up cash in stock. Because her objective is paying wages, she should buy only a smaller amount, or negotiate later payment. If you used the RM4,000, the RM3,500 and the wage objective, you applied the case. If you wrote only about discounts, the focus is using facts and the objective in a judgement.
Whichever type of slip you made, write it down. It is a valid starting point for the lesson.
Step 4: Write your focus statement
Use this format and keep it short.
“I know most of the marketing and finance terms, but my case answers repeat the facts and my conclusions do not mention the owner’s objective. I want to work on these two.”
Send it in your enquiry, or read it out at the start of the lesson.
What should the hour look like?
A paid one-hour trial usually looks like this:
- a few minutes to explain your situation, syllabus code and exam year,
- most of the hour working on your own answers with the teacher asking which case fact each point uses,
- a fresh case to test the repaired habit,
- a clear next step that you can try yourself.
You can use the one-hour trial agenda builder to plan it, and the business case-answer planner to organise an answer before you arrive.
What if the focus changes during the lesson?
That is normal and often useful. The teacher may find the real cause sits one topic earlier, for example that a weak evaluation comes from unsure finance ideas. One-to-one lessons can follow the real cause, so be ready to change course.
