Extend a response without memorising a whole script

You know the answer in Malay, yet it comes out as one short sentence and then the room goes quiet.

  6. Where this leads next

To extend a spoken answer, build it in three parts: the answer, a reason, and a detail. You can produce those parts live in almost any topic, so you do not need a memorised speech.

This is the first skill in spoken interaction, and the other lessons rely on it.

Why does a script fail, and a pattern work?

A script is one fixed block. If the question is slightly different from the one you prepared, the block no longer fits and you freeze.

A pattern is a short set of slots. You fill each slot with whatever the question needs, so the same habit works for school, family, food or travel.

How do you build the three parts?

  1. Answer directly. Use words from the question. Asked about sukan, start with Saya suka… or Saya tidak suka….
  2. Give a reason. Link with kerana, sebab, or oleh sebab itu.
  3. Add a detail. Give a time, place, person or example. Link with contohnya, biasanya, pada waktu…, or di….
  4. Optional: add one contrast, or stop. Use tetapi or walau bagaimanapun if you have a second view.

Worked example

Question: Adakah anda suka membaca?

Step 1, answer: Saya suka membaca.

Step 2, reason: …kerana saya dapat belajar perkara baharu.

Step 3, detail: Contohnya, minggu lepas saya membaca buku tentang haiwan di hutan hujan.

Step 4, optional contrast: Tetapi saya jarang membaca pada hari sekolah kerana saya sibuk.

Said together, the reply is: Saya suka membaca kerana saya dapat belajar perkara baharu. Contohnya, minggu lepas saya membaca buku tentang haiwan di hutan hujan. Tetapi saya jarang membaca pada hari sekolah kerana saya sibuk.

It has three short sentences, each easy to say. If you do not read at all, the same frame works: Saya tidak begitu suka membaca kerana…

The mistake to watch for

A common slip is to start a prepared speech that has little to do with the question.

Question: Adakah anda suka membaca?

Mistaken answer: Hobi saya ialah bermain bola sepak. Saya bermain setiap hari Sabtu dengan kawan saya.

The speech is fluent Malay, but it answers a different question. The correction is to answer the exact question first, then use your prepared material only if it truly fits: Saya tidak begitu suka membaca, tetapi saya suka bermain bola sepak.

Check yourself

Say each answer aloud, then open the sample.

1. Extend this reply: Saya suka makan nasi lemak.

Show answer

One possible extension: Saya suka makan nasi lemak kerana rasanya sedap. Biasanya saya makan nasi lemak untuk sarapan pagi di kantin sekolah. Your reason and detail may differ.

2. The question is Awak naik apa ke sekolah? Give an answer with a reason.

Show answer

For example: Saya naik bas ke sekolah kerana rumah saya jauh. Perjalanan mengambil masa kira-kira tiga puluh minit. The answer names the transport first, then explains.

3. Which linking word fits: Saya suka hujung minggu, ___ saya tidak perlu pergi ke sekolah.

Show answer

kerana (or sebab), because the clause gives the reason.

Where this leads next

Next, learn what to do when you do not understand the question in Ask for clarification in Malay. Then use the spoken interaction practice set to test the pattern on mixed topics.

Students who give one-line answers often know much more Malay than they show. A teacher in online one-to-one Malay tuition can listen live and prompt the next piece.

Questions people ask

How long should a spoken answer be?

Long enough to give a position, a reason and one detail, which is usually two to four sentences. A longer answer is not automatically better. Check the current speaking component details for your route on the Cambridge page, then practise answers that fit that format.

Is it wrong to prepare phrases in advance?

Preparing flexible phrases is useful. Linking words such as kerana and contohnya work in almost any topic. The risk is a fixed paragraph that you recite whatever the question says, because it will not answer what was asked.

What if I run out of ideas halfway through?

Use the safest extension: give a reason, then a time or place. For example, add pada waktu pagi or di rumah. Small concrete details are easier to produce than new opinions, and they keep the answer relevant.
