Before you trust any paper guide, confirm the exam year you are entering and check that the guide was written for that year. This comes first because a guide for another year can describe papers, tasks or wording that do not match your syllabus.
This lesson opens assessment-version transitions. The Geography 0460 year-change page explains where Cambridge publishes each version.
Why does the exam year matter?
Cambridge publishes a syllabus for a range of exam years and replaces it from time to time. Online advice rarely says which version it follows. A tip from a forum, a video or a friend’s old notes may belong to a different year.
Your exam centre decides which year and series you enter. Cambridge’s 0460 page then shows the matching document. Your exam centre handles entries, dates and deadlines.
How do you label a guide, step by step?
- Ask your centre for your exam year and write it on the front of your file.
- Find the year on the guide. Look at the cover, the footer or the introduction for a syllabus year or exam year.
- Compare the two years. A match gets the label “matches my year”. A different year gets “different year”. No year gets “unchecked”.
- Open the Cambridge syllabus that covers your exam year and read its assessment section.
- Re-label after reading. Only advice you can find in your syllabus becomes “verified”.
Worked example
Aisha’s centre tells her she is entering in 2027. She has 12 revision files. Nine show a year on the cover and three show none.
| File | Year shown | Label |
|---|---|---|
| Rivers notes | 2027 to 2029 | matches my year |
| Paper tips (shared) | 2025 | different year |
| Coasts summary | none | unchecked |
The share of files with no year is 3 out of 12, which is 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25, or 25%. Check: 0.25 × 12 = 3. So a quarter of her files need a year check before she uses their paper advice.
She starts with the “different year” file. Its topic notes may still help, but she marks its paper tips as “do not use until checked”.
The mistake to watch for
A common slip is to assume a recent upload date means the guide fits this year.
Mistaken thinking: “This video went online last month, so it is for my exam.”
An upload date shows when a guide was posted, not which syllabus it follows.
The correction is to look for the syllabus year the guide names. If it names none, label it unchecked and compare it with your year’s syllabus yourself.
Check yourself
1. A guide names the 2025 syllabus and your exam year is 2027. What label does it get?
Show answer
Different year. You may still read its topic notes, but you mark its paper advice as unchecked until you compare it with your year’s syllabus.
2. You have 20 files and 14 carry a year. What percentage carry no year?
Show answer
20 − 14 = 6 files with no year. 6 ÷ 20 = 0.3, so 30%. Check: 0.3 × 20 = 6.
3. Who should you ask if you are unsure which exam year you are entering?
Show answer
Your school or exam centre. They make the entry, so they know the year and series.
