This set mixes the four skills from study, work and future interests: school preferences with reasons, summarising a notice, asking a suitable question and explaining future plans. The questions are original and run from easier to harder.
How should I use this set?
- Cover the answers and write your own French first. Several questions ask for your own sentences, so there is more than one correct response.
- Mark each answer sure, unsure or guess before you check it.
- Open the answer. For open questions, compare the features in the model rather than the exact words.
- Use the routing section at the end for any error.
Questions
1. Complete: J’aime l’histoire ___ le professeur raconte des histoires passionnantes.
Show answer
A reason is needed, and a full clause follows. J’aime l’histoire parce que le professeur raconte des histoires passionnantes. Car would also work in writing.
2. Correct the error: Je préfère le français que l’anglais.
Show answer
Préférer takes à, not que. Before a vowel, à stays as it is: Je préfère le français à l’anglais.
3. Add a reason with its own verb: Ma matière préférée est l’informatique.
Show answer
Model: Ma matière préférée est l’informatique parce que j’aime créer des programmes. Check that the part after parce que has a subject and a verb.
Use this fictional notice for questions 4 to 7.
Cours de cuisine pour jeunes, Maison des jeunes de Valmont. Samedi 14 juin, de 10 h à 12 h. Pour les 12 à 16 ans. 5 euros pour les ingrédients. Inscription par téléphone avant le 10 juin.
4. Who can take part, and what does it cost?
Show answer
Young people aged 12 to 16, and 5 euros for the ingredients. Write it in French as Le cours est pour les jeunes de 12 à 16 ans et coûte 5 euros.
5. Summarise the notice in two sentences, with the date and how to register.
Show answer
Model: La Maison des jeunes de Valmont organise un cours de cuisine le samedi 14 juin. Il faut s’inscrire par téléphone avant le 10 juin. Both sentences have a verb, the date and the deadline are exact, and the wording is not copied line by line.
6. Which detail would you leave out if the question asked only for the cost and the way to register?
Show answer
The age group and the time (de 10 h à 12 h) are not needed. You would keep 5 euros and inscription par téléphone avant le 10 juin.
7. The notice does not say what to bring. Write a polite question to the adult organiser.
Show answer
Model: Pourriez-vous me dire ce qu’il faut apporter, s’il vous plaît ? It asks for the missing fact and uses vous. Est-ce qu’il faut apporter un tablier ? is also correct.
8. Turn into a question with est-ce que: Les ingrédients sont fournis.
Show answer
Put est-ce que in front and keep the order: Est-ce que les ingrédients sont fournis ?
9. Correct the register and the preposition: Tu peux me dire quelle heure le cours finit ?
Show answer
Use vous with an organiser and add à: Pouvez-vous me dire à quelle heure le cours finit ?
10. Complete: Si je ___ (avoir) de bons résultats, je ___ (faire) des études de médecine.
Show answer
Present after si, future in the main clause: Si j’ai de bons résultats, je ferai des études de médecine.
11. Write three or four sentences answering Qu’est-ce que tu veux faire plus tard ? Give an interest, a reason and a next step.
Show answer
Model: Plus tard, je voudrais être ingénieur parce que j’aime les mathématiques et la technologie. Après le lycée, je vais étudier l’ingénierie à l’université. Si je réussis mes examens, j’irai peut-être à l’étranger. Check: voudrais followed by an infinitive, no article before ingénieur, a reason with its own verb, vais plus an infinitive, and the present after si.
If you got these wrong
| Error type | Questions | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| Reasons without a verb, or préférer que | 1, 2, 3 | Describe school preferences with an explanation |
| Copying or choosing the wrong facts | 4, 5, 6 | Summarise information in a fictional opportunity notice |
| Question form, missing preposition or wrong register | 7, 8, 9 | Ask an appropriate question about an activity |
| Tense after si, or an article before a job | 10, 11 | Explain a future study or work interest |
Repeating the same slip three times is useful information. Note which row it belongs to, revisit that lesson, and then try a fresh question of the same kind a day later.
