Chinese and Mandarin original practice and explained answers

You can follow a model answer, yet a blank Chinese question is where your skill is really tested.

On this page
  1. How should you work through a set?
  2. A three-question warm-up
  3. Which sets are there, and in what order?
  4. What do the answers show you?

Each module on this site finishes with an original mixed practice set and explained answers. This page shows how to work through a set, gives you a three-question warm-up in Chinese, and lists the sets in a study order.

How should you work through a set?

The aim is to make your reasoning reliable, not to collect ticks.

  1. Attempt first. Do the whole set without the answers, on paper, in Chinese where the task is Chinese-language work.
  2. Compare by step. Mark the point where your reasoning first differs from the explanation.
  3. Name the cause. Was it the text, a word, relevance or sentence accuracy?
  4. Log and retest. Record it in the mistake log and retest queue and redo a fresh question later.

The original mixed-practice builder puts together a session from several modules, and when no reviewed questions match it says so honestly instead of generating unchecked answers.

A three-question warm-up

Read the passage, then answer.

小美每个周末都去社区中心当义工。她负责整理旧书,也教小朋友折纸。上个月,中心举办义卖,她折的纸鹤全部卖完了,她把钱交给了中心。

1. 小美在社区中心做哪两件事?

Show answer

She tidies old books (整理旧书) and teaches children to fold paper (教小朋友折纸). Both are stated in the second sentence. The sale of the cranes is a later event, not a third duty.

2. 纸鹤的结果怎么样?这个结果对谁有帮助?

Show answer

The cranes were all sold (全部卖完了). The passage says she gave the money to the centre (把钱交给了中心), so the centre benefits. The passage does not say what the centre used it for, so do not add that.

3. 下面哪一句是主旨?请选一个并说明理由。(A) 纸鹤很漂亮。(B) 小美用自己的时间和技能帮助社区。(C) 义卖在上个月举行。

Show answer

Choose B. It covers the tidying, the teaching and the sale. A is not stated and C is a single detail. A main idea has to cover the whole passage.

Which sets are there, and in what order?

Work through the sets that fit your confirmed code in order the first time. Later, choose sets by the causes in your log.

Everyone

Mandarin as a foreign language (0547 route)

Chinese as a second language (0523 route)

Chinese as a first language (0509 route)

Each group follows the route described in the study route guide. Check the syllabus for your exam year for the exact tasks you will meet.

What do the answers show you?

An explained answer names the evidence, the reasoning and what a weaker answer would have done. For a reading question, the evidence is a quoted phrase from the passage. For a writing question, it is a revised sentence beside the original.

If the same cause keeps appearing, read the terminology guide and the revision guide. When a set exposes a habit you cannot explain, our online one-to-one Chinese and Mandarin tuition lets a teacher watch how you work and find where that habit starts.

Questions people ask

Are these real past paper questions?

No. Every passage and question on this site is original, written for teaching, with its own explained answer. They are not copied or predicted from any exam. For official papers, use your school, your exam centre and the Cambridge page for your code.

Which sets should I use for my code?

Confirm your code first, then use the sets that match the route. The shared sets on characters, words and writing accuracy help every code. Use the study route guide to pick blocks, and ask your teacher if you are unsure.

Do the answers stay in Chinese?

Yes. Passages, questions and model answers are in Chinese where the skill is Chinese-language work. The explanations around them are in the language of the page you read, so you can follow the reasoning.

What should I do after a wrong answer?

Cover the explanation, redo the question from a blank page, then compare. Name the cause, log it and retest with a fresh question a day or two later. Do not just read the answer again.
