Connect structure with meaning

You can say where the passage begins and ends, but not why the writer ordered the ideas that way.

Structure is the order in which a writer places ideas, and each shift in that order can carry meaning. Questions on structure ask why the passage moves from one thing to another.

This lesson builds on explaining language choices by looking at the whole passage instead of one word. The Chinese text below stays in Simplified Chinese, with English explanation.

Mark every shift in the passage, then ask three questions about each one.

  1. What changes? (sound, mood, time, speaker, level of information)
  2. What signals the change? (a connective such as 后来, a short sentence, a new image)
  3. What does the reader now understand that they did not before?

A structure answer is strong when it names the shift, quotes the signal, and states the new understanding.

Worked example

Invented passage, with each sentence numbered for reference:

①集市上人声鼎沸,卖鱼的吆喝声盖过了一切。②母亲站在摊前,一句话也没有说。③后来,我才明白,那天她是在数口袋里最后的几张钞票。④回家的路上,集市的声音依然很响,我却什么也没有听见。

Question: how does the structure of the passage help create its meaning?

Shift 1, ① to ②. Noise (人声鼎沸) gives way to a single silent figure (一句话也没有说). The contrast makes the mother’s silence stand out.

Shift 2, ② to ③. 后来 (hòulái, “later”) signals a delayed reveal. The reason for the silence is withheld until sentence ③, so the reader first feels puzzled, like the child.

Shift 3, ③ to ④. The market is loud again (依然很响), but the narrator hears nothing (什么也没有听见). The return to the opening setting now carries the weight of what the child has learned.

Full answer: The passage moves from noise to silence, delays the reason until 后来, then returns to the loud market. Because the narrator now hears nothing, the final echo shows how the discovery has changed how the child experiences the same scene.

A common mistake

Weak answer: 文章有开头、发展和结尾,结构很完整。

Any complete text has these parts. The answer says nothing about this passage and does not link order to meaning.

Correction: name the delayed reveal after 后来 and the changed meaning of the returning market sound.

Self-check

  1. Why does the writer delay the reason for the mother’s silence until ③?
Show answerIt lets the reader share the child's puzzlement first, so the reveal about the last few banknotes lands harder.
  1. What does the repetition of the market sound in ④ add?
Show answerIt shows the same noise but a changed listener. The contrast between 依然很响 and 什么也没有听见 shows the child's attention has moved to the mother's worry.
  1. Rewrite the weak answer into one precise sentence about shift ③ to ④.
Show answerSample: After the reveal in ③, the return of the loud market in ④ is undercut by 什么也没有听见, showing the child can no longer experience the scene as before.

Where next?

Continue with Avoid substituting a stock literary phrase for analysis. The module overview shows the whole route, and the mixed practice set includes structure questions.

If your structure answers still list the beginning, middle and end, a teacher in online one-to-one Chinese tuition can help you link each shift to its meaning.

Questions people ask

What is structure in a short passage?

Structure is the order in which ideas, images or events are placed, and the shifts between them. A shift might be from noise to silence, from past to present, or from a statement to a surprise. Each shift can carry meaning.

Is 'beginning, middle, end' a good structure answer?

No. Almost every text has a beginning, middle and end, so the label says nothing. Name the specific shifts and explain what each one does to the reader's understanding.

What is a turning point?

It is the place where the passage changes direction, such as a sentence that reveals a hidden reason. Find it, quote the signal words, and say what changes in the reader's view afterwards.

Can a return to the opening image be meaningful?

Yes. When a passage ends by echoing its opening, compare the two. The same scene often means something different after the reader has learned more, and the difference is the point.
