Your examination year is the year you sit the exam, and it is confirmed by your school or exam centre. It decides whether your course is Business Studies 0450 or Business 0264. Cambridge identifies 0264 for first assessment in 2027 and keeps 0450 for its own applicable years.
You need this before any other step in the 0450 to 0264 transition. The year is not the year you began the course, and it is not a date printed in a book.
Why can the year be unclear?
Many students start a two-year course in one year and sit the exam in another. A school may also change a class from one code to the other, or enter a candidate for a different year from the rest of the class.
So three different years can be in play: the year you started, the year of your notes, and the year of the exam. Only the last one matters for the code.
How do you confirm it, step by step?
- Ask the centre in writing for three things: the code you are entered for, the exam year, and the exam series.
- Save the reply. A WhatsApp message or a school notice is enough, as long as you can open it again.
- Open the Cambridge subject page for that code and find the syllabus document listed for your year.
- Write the document name and year at the start of your revision file.
- Mark anything unconfirmed as “to confirm” instead of filling it with a guess.
Private candidates follow the same steps with the centre where they plan to sit.
Worked example
Hana is in Form 4 in Penang. Her centre’s reply says: “Code 0264, exam year 2027, series to be confirmed.” Her friend Zul, in the same school but in a different programme, was told: “Code 0450, exam year before 2027.”
Step 1, read each reply separately. Hana’s year is 2027 and Cambridge identifies 0264 for first assessment in 2027, so her letter and Cambridge’s wording agree. Zul’s year is 2026, which is earlier than 2027, so 0264 is not expected for him.
Step 2, check the gap. 2027 − 2026 = 1 year. Hana and Zul sit a year apart, so they cannot share one syllabus document by default.
Step 3, record it. Hana writes “0264, 2027, series to be confirmed” and opens the 0264 page. Zul writes “0450, 2026” and opens the 0450 page for the document listed for his year.
Step 4, confirm. Both ask the centre one more question: “Is this still correct for our entry?” Each keeps the reply.
Notice that the friends studied together in the same school, but the two entries differ, so each plan starts from the student’s own letter.
The mistake to watch for
A student counts forward from when the course began.
Mistaken reasoning: “I started in January 2026, so my exam is in 2026 and I am on 0450.”
A two-year course that starts in January 2026 may well end later than 2026. The start date does not set the entry year.
The correction is to ask the centre and write down the answer. When the answer is not yet known, write “to confirm” and keep your notes in two labelled folders until it arrives.
Check yourself
1. Aiman’s centre confirms “code 0450, exam year before 2027”. Which Cambridge page should he open, and what should he record?
Show answer
He should open the 0450 page and find the syllabus document listed for his year. He records the document name, the code 0450 and the exam year 2026 at the start of his revision file.
2. A textbook was published in 2024. Does that tell you your exam year?
Show answer
No. A publication year only says when the book was printed. Your exam year comes from your centre.
3. Who confirms the exam series, you, your teacher at home or your centre?
Show answer
Your school or exam centre. Entry details come from them and from Cambridge.
Where this leads next
Once the year is written down, compare the old and new code using official scope records. The 0264 code guide lists what Cambridge says about the code, and the syllabus navigator can store what you confirmed.
If your year is still unclear after you have asked, online one-to-one Business tuition can begin with a plan built on both possibilities until your centre replies.
