Avoid assuming the first global assessment series is available in Malaysia

A date on a Cambridge page can look like your exam date, but it describes the course and not your centre.

On this page
  1. Why is the first series easy to misread?
  2. What do you ask, and what do you do with the answer?
  3. Worked example
  4. The mistake to watch for
  5. Check yourself
  6. Where this leads next

Cambridge’s wording about first assessment tells you the year a syllabus is first assessed worldwide. It does not tell you which exam series your centre in Malaysia offers. Cambridge runs exam series in March, May/June and October/November. Your centre decides which of these it offers you.

So never assume March, May/June or October/November. Ask your centre, write the answer down and plan from that date.

Why is the first series easy to misread?

“First assessment in 2027” sounds like a calendar date. It is a statement about the syllabus: from that year, the course is assessed. A reference to March first assessment does not establish that a Malaysian centre offers March entry.

Your school or exam centre decides the series it offers, the entry deadline and the registration process. Those steps are theirs and Cambridge’s.

What do you ask, and what do you do with the answer?

  1. Ask the centre: “Which series am I entered for, and what is the date range and entry deadline?”
  2. Write down the reply with the date you received it.
  3. Count the days between today and the first day of that series.
  4. Convert days to weeks: divide by 7, and keep the leftover days.
  5. Divide the weeks among topic blocks, and keep the last two weeks for mixed practice.

Worked example

The dates below are invented to show the counting. Your centre’s dates are the real ones. Suppose the centre says your series starts on 12 October, and today is 6 July.

Step 1, count the days. From 6 July to 31 July is 25 days. Then add August 31, September 30 and October 12.

25 + 31 + 30 + 12 = 98 days.

Step 2, convert to weeks. 98 ÷ 7 = 14 weeks, with nothing left over.

Step 3, build the plan. Seven topic blocks at 2 weeks each use 7 × 2 = 14 weeks. That leaves no time for mixed practice, so Dewi reduces to 6 blocks, which uses 12 weeks, and keeps the final 2 weeks for mixed practice. Check: 12 + 2 = 14.

Step 4, test a change. If she starts on 20 July instead, the count is 11 + 31 + 30 + 12 = 84 days, which is 84 ÷ 7 = 12 weeks. Her plan now needs one block fewer, or a faster pace.

Because the centre’s date is what moves the plan, she confirms it before she buys any more books.

The mistake to watch for

A parent reads the Cambridge page and books the plan around March.

Mistaken approach: “The page says first assessment in 2027, so my daughter sits in March 2027.”

The page does not state which series a Malaysian centre offers, so the plan may start from a date that does not exist for her.

The correction is to ask the centre which series applies and by when entry closes. If the answer is not yet available, plan two calendars lightly and commit to one when you hear.

Check yourself

1. Does “first assessment in 2027” tell you which series your centre offers?

Show answer

No. It tells you the syllabus is first assessed that year. Your centre decides which series it offers.

2. An invented series starts on 12 October and you begin on 20 July. How many weeks do you have?

Show answer

Days: 11 + 31 + 30 + 12 = 84. Weeks: 84 ÷ 7 = 12 weeks.

3. Who confirms entry and registration?

Show answer

Your school or exam centre, working with Cambridge.

Where this leads next

Put your confirmed date into the syllabus navigator, then try the whole routine in the mixed practice set. The 2027 change guide lists what else to verify.

In online one-to-one Business tuition, a teacher can build the weekly plan back from the date your centre gives you.
