After IGCSE, the route Cambridge describes is O Level or Cambridge International AS and A Levels, and the exact route that suits a student depends on the institution they want to join. Other pre-university programmes exist in Malaysia, and each one sets its own entry requirements.
We teach IGCSE, not admissions. This page shows you how to get the answer from the people who decide.
What does Cambridge say comes next?
Cambridge describes the IGCSE as part of the Cambridge Pathway, leading to Cambridge O Level and Cambridge International AS and A Levels. AS and A Level are described as qualifications typically taken after IGCSE or O Level.
The AS Level is the first year of study, and the A Level extends over two years in total. Cambridge notes that some subjects can start as an AS Level and be extended to a full A Level.
What other routes should you know about?
Malaysian students also look at foundation programmes, diplomas and other pre-university options. The institutions that run those programmes set and describe them.
MQA publishes a separate list of school qualifications for entry to higher education in Malaysia, and a separate list of entry qualifications for foundation programmes. MQA states that entry requirements fall under the Department of Higher Education. Use these as a starting point and then confirm with the institution.
| Route | Who sets the entry requirement | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Cambridge AS and A Level | The school or centre offering it | Subjects offered, grades needed in IGCSE subjects |
| Foundation or other pre-university programme | The institution running it | Whether IGCSE is accepted, which subjects and grades |
| Diploma or other study | The institution | Entry qualification and any subject requirement |
How do you decide?
Start with the end point. Write down the course or career you are drawn to, then work backwards to the programme that leads there.
- Name two or three courses or institutions you might want.
- Read their published entry requirements, or ask admissions in writing.
- Note which IGCSE subjects and grades they mention.
- Compare what you have now with what they ask for.
- Decide where to put extra preparation time.
Our page on future course requirements lists questions to ask. The comparison with SPM may also help if you are weighing different qualifications.
When do IGCSE subject choices matter?
Some programmes ask for particular subjects, such as mathematics or a science, at a certain grade. If you are still choosing subjects, check this first rather than after the exam.
Core and Extended tiers can also matter, because they affect the grades available in a subject. Read about Core and Extended route questions and grading and thresholds.
How can tuition support the next step?
A weak IGCSE topic often becomes a bigger problem in the next course. One-to-one lessons can close that gap before the next programme begins, at your child’s pace and using their own questions.
Our service is online one-to-one Cambridge IGCSE tuition anywhere in Malaysia. Send a WhatsApp enquiry and we assign a teacher.
The paid one-hour trial starts from RM80 at that teacher’s confirmed rate, which you agree before the lesson and which stays the same for later lessons. See IGCSE tuition explained for how a month usually works.
