Before you follow any task guidance, match three things: your code, your exam year and the year the guide was written for. If any one does not match, treat the guide as general practice only.
This lesson sits in the Malay qualification routes module and follows from telling 0546 from 0696. Details of tasks and layout must always come from the current Cambridge syllabus for your code.
Why does the year matter?
A syllabus belongs to a range of examination years. Guidance, worksheets and videos are written at a point in time and may describe an earlier or later version.
Your school or exam centre knows which series you are entered for. Ask them, then confirm on the Cambridge subject page.
A checking routine, step by step
- Write down your code and the exam year from your centre.
- Open the syllabus for that code and find the years it lists.
- Look at the resource for a year, an edition or a date.
- Compare one task in the resource with a sample on the Cambridge page.
- Label the resource as matched, partly matched or unchecked.
Worked example
The people and notes below are invented. Daniel is entered for 0546. He finds a worksheet pack titled “Malay Writing Guide” with no year.
He fills a small table:
| Check | Result |
|---|---|
| My code | 0546 |
| My exam year | confirmed with centre |
| Pack year | none shown |
| Task layout matches Cambridge sample | partly |
| Label | unchecked |
He keeps the pack for vocabulary practice, such as this invented line:
Kami berbincang tentang pelan perjalanan sekolah.
For the writing layout, he uses the Cambridge page and asks his teacher.
The mistake to watch for
A student thinks: “This guide has lots of answers, so it must be right for me.”
Mistaken reasoning: a detailed guide is automatically the right guide.
Detail does not prove the guide matches your year or your code.
The correction is to label every resource before it becomes part of your plan. A label takes a minute and saves weeks.
Check yourself
All details are invented.
1. A guide lists a year that is not your exam year. How do you label it?
Show answer
Not matched. Use it only for general language practice and check any task format against your own syllabus.
2. A guide has no year and no code. What is your first step?
Show answer
Label it unchecked, then compare one task with the sample material on the Cambridge page for your code.
3. Who confirms the year you are entered for?
Show answer
Your school or exam centre. Your centre handles entry, dates and deadlines, so confirm them with your centre.
Where this leads next
Once your materials are labelled, make sure the language of each lesson matches the language of your answers in separating explanation language from assessed language. Try the practice set afterwards, and use the writing revision compare view to compare two drafts of your own.
