Practice: talking about the present in French

Knowing the rules and writing a correct French sentence under your own steam are two different things.

This set mixes the skills from present-time expression: regular verbs, irregular verbs, negatives and questions. The questions go from easy to harder. Write your answers in French before you open the worked answer.

Check each ending, each negative word and each question form. The lessons are linked at the end for any area that needs another look.

Use only one form in a single question.

Then use ne … pas with avoir and elision: Je n’ai pas assez d’argent.

Assez is followed by d’ (assez d’argent), not by du.

How to read your results

Count the errors by type, not by total. Two mistakes in the same area point to one gap, which you can fix with one lesson. A spread of different mistakes usually means you are rushing, so slow down and read each sentence back once.

When the topic feels secure, move on to past and future meaning. If you want a teacher to listen to you say these sentences and correct them live, see online one-to-one French tuition.

Questions people ask

How should I use this practice set?

Cover the answers and write each response in full French before you open it. Say the sentence aloud once. Then compare with the worked answer and note the type of error, not just the score. Redo the questions you missed after a few days to check the correction has stuck.

Are these questions from past papers?

No. Every question here is original and written for practice of present-time skills. They are not copied from Cambridge papers. To see the real format and requirements, check the current syllabus and specimen materials on the Cambridge IGCSE French 0520 page.

What should I do if I get most of them wrong?

Do not redo the whole set at once. Use the routing list at the end to find the lesson that matches your errors, work through its example and self-check, then return to the matching questions. One lesson at a time is more effective than a full restart.
