0696 is the code for the first language Malay route at Cambridge IGCSE. It identifies the qualification on entry forms, syllabus documents and past papers, and it is the first thing to confirm before you choose what to revise.

This page states only what is stable and tells you where to check the rest. The official source is always the Cambridge subject page linked below, which also carries any notices about the qualification.

What does the code tell you?

The code names the qualification, not the exam year. The same code appears year after year, and Cambridge issues a syllabus document that covers a run of exam years.

Two things follow. First, the code alone is not enough to pick a syllabus, so you also need your exam year. Second, a document for a different run of years, or for a different code, may describe wording or arrangements that differ from your own.

How do I confirm my syllabus in five steps?

  1. Ask your school or exam centre for your entry code and exam year.
  2. Open the Cambridge 0696 subject page and read the syllabus document and any notices listed for that year.
  3. Record the document name and year at the start of your revision file.
  4. Use the syllabus navigator to write down what you confirmed and what is still unresolved.
  5. Compare versions with the syllabus version viewer if you are using older notes or textbooks.

What should I check with my exam centre?

Your exam centre handles things we cannot. Ask them:

  • Which exam series are you entered for? Do not assume May/June or October/November.
  • Is 0696 available for your exam year at your centre, and which components apply?
  • What are the registration and entry deadlines?
  • Are any access arrangements relevant to your entry?

Private candidates also deal with the centre and Cambridge directly. Follow the Cambridge private candidate guidance and confirm details with the centre you plan to use.

Is 0696 the same as 0546?

No. 0696 is the first language Malay route and 0546 is Malay Foreign Language, and they carry separate codes. Both use Malay, but the task types and what the assessment asks of you must come from the page for your own code.

Read the 0546 code guide if your school materials mention both, and the lesson on distinguishing 0546 from 0696 by the actual entry for a step-by-step check. The help page I need to distinguish 0546 from 0696 covers the same question from the student’s side.

Is this the same as SPM Bahasa Melayu?

No. SPM Bahasa Melayu is a separate Malaysian qualification. Malay skills from school help with the language, but this site does not assume that SPM task formats, marking or expectations apply to 0696.

A short example of using the code

A student speaks Malay at home and assumes the foreign language papers are “too easy”, so they begin on a workbook for a different qualification. The entry form says 0696.

The steps: the student asks the centre to confirm the code in writing. They open the 0696 subject page, find the document for their exam year and write its name at the start of the file. They choose a first-language style task, such as a short piece on a theme like “Kepentingan membaca dalam kehidupan”, and keep the foreign language workbook on a “check first” list.

What do we not state here?

Take paper numbers, durations, weightings and grade thresholds from the current Cambridge syllabus for your exam year. Those belong to Cambridge and can change between syllabus versions. The Cambridge subject page and the syllabus document are the place to read them.

Where to go next

Build a plan with the study route guide, read how the route works in the assessment guide and see the whole subject in the Malay language pathways learning guide. The module on Malay qualification routes walks through the checks step by step.

If you are unsure whether first language or foreign language Malay practice suits you, online one-to-one Malay tuition can follow your confirmed 0696 entry.

Questions people ask

What is 0696?

0696 is the Cambridge entry code for the first language Malay route at IGCSE level, as listed in our subject records. It is a different qualification from 0546, which is Malay Foreign Language. Quote the four-digit code whenever you look up a syllabus or past paper, and Cambridge lists the title as Malay - First Language (0696).

How do I find the right syllabus document for 0696?

Open the Cambridge 0696 subject page and look for the syllabus document and any notices that list your exam year. Do not assume that a document for another year, or for 0546, describes your entry. Record the document name and year in your revision file.

Does speaking Malay at home mean 0696 is my route?

No. The route is decided by the code you are entered for, which your school or exam centre confirms, not by home language or background. Ask the centre for your entry code in writing before you choose practice material.

Who enters me for the exam?

Your school or exam centre. Registration, entry, results and access arrangements go through your centre and Cambridge. Ask the centre for your entry code and exam year in writing.
